Participants must designate an exam location when applying to the American Petroleum Institute to take the API 653 Exam. The CodeWest API 653 Exam Prep Course ends the day before the API Exam date whenever possible, so we recommend that participants choose Houston as the exam site for convenience and savings on travel expenses. Designate an exam site by indicating your preference on the API exam application.

CodeWest API 653 Exam Prep Course Instructors, Authors, and Editors

J. W. Coley is the primary author of this course. Jim is a Registered Professional Engineer and has served on many API committees. He served as Chairman of the API Subcommittee on Inspection, Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Corrosion, Materials and Inspection and participated as a member of several Task Groups including API-510, API-570 and API-653.

Richard L. Seay is a degreed engineer with 34 Years experience in refining including responsibilities such as design engineer, inspection engineer, assistant chief inspector, supervisor - process engineering, manager - energy conservation, supervisor of utility operations, supervisor of environmental operations, supervisor - process safety management and manager of inspection. Richard held the API-510, 570 and 653 certifications, is a past member of the API Inspection Committee and has extensive experience working with and training Inspectors. Richard also presents our API-570 exam prep course. He recently retired form a large refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.

Marvin L. Coats has more than 25 years experience in design, construction, operation, and maintenance of pressure systems and related equipment. His experience spans nuclear & fossil power generation, upstream oil and gas and transport tanks/vessels to name a few. He is an active and past member of several ASME boiler and pressure vessel committees Subgroup Section I Design and past member of Subgroup General Requirements Section VIII. Marvin holds an active NB Commission with A, B, N, I and IS endorsements. Marvin is an experienced trainer is ASME and API topics. He has taken over updating and editing the CodeWest API-510 and API-570 courses.

Tim Schindler: Tim is an ASNT Level III in RT, VT, PT and MT, AWS/CWI, and also holds the API-510, 570 & API-653 certifications. Tim has extensive experience in boiler, pressure vessel and piping inspection in the power generation and petrochemical fields and brings a wealth of practical knowledge to our courses and the presentation. Tim was a course author and instructior and we welcomed him back in June 2008. Tim has written both 510 and 570 courses and presented 510, 570, 653, AWI/CWI and other technical courses.

Will Carter is the past Chairman of the API-650 Committee, initiated API-653 and also participated on the API-653 Task Group which developed the original 653 document. Will is a Professional Engineer with over thirty years experience and holds a Ph.d. in Mechanical Engineering. Will has presented this course several times with excellent results for his students.

Charlie Cramlet: Charlie brings over 25 years of experience to CodeWest. Experience from working hands on as a welder, NDE Level II, API-510, 570 and 653 Inspector, CWI and National Board Commissioned Inspector. Charlie was a Chief Inspector for one of the largest chemical companies in the world. He is also experienced in presentation of technical material in many formats and forums including inspector training.
